Ashtanga Yoga Teacher Training

Ashtanga means eight limbs in Sanskrit as outlined by ancient Yoga sutras which wasshared by great sages thousands of years ago. Yoga means being aware of you better & keeping your mind & body calm. AshtangaVinayasa yoga synchronizes the breath with a progressive series of posturesa process which produces intense internal heat so that the body starts sweating; this purifies and detoxifies muscles and organs. This results in improved blood circulation in body which physically feels light and strong and keeps the mind calm. According to Yoga Stair experts attaining and mastering these skills is essential for health and salvation and AshtangaVinyasa Yoga helps to enrich the soul and to reach the divinity. It can be done by pregnant ladies, elderly people, young people and even kids.

The eight limbs of yoga involve eight steps which are linked to each other and each step is equally important and thus we cannot neglect any step, but there is a logical order in which they must be approached. Here is the list of the eight steps of yoga with their meaning:

Yama - the five restraints or the "donot's"

  • Ahimsa - Non-violence
  • Satya - Honesty
  • Brahmacharya - Control of the senses
  • Asteya - Non-burglary
  • Aparigraha - Non-greediness and notaking of gifts

Niyama - the five observances or the "do's"

  • Saucha - Pureness, cleanliness
  • Santosha - Pleasure
  • Tapas - Austerity
  • Swadhyaya - Self-education, reading of scriptures
  • IshwaraPranidhana - Submission to Divinity's will
  • Asana - Stable posture (asana)
  • Pranayama - Control of prana or life force
  • Pratyahara - Extraction of the senses
  • Dharana - Attentiveness
  • Dhyana - Meditation
  • Samadhi - Superconscious state

Pranayama is an important element of Asthanga Yoga. There are three vital elements to the Ashtanga practice which are referred as tristana:-

  • Ujjayi or breathe.
  • Drishti or staring points. There is a set stare point for each movement (third eye, nose, foot and hand), this permits the practioners of the yoga to distract the mind from outer sensory impetuses and focus the mind and move.
  • Bandhas or body locks which lock prana (energy) in the body.
